Course Description

The objective of this course will be to apply your “classroom” education via a combination field training and research experience.  The field sites may include multiple sites throughout the Wyoming Valley and The Pocono Region.

Course Background

Field courses and hands-on experiences has long been a tradition at Wilkes University.  The main goal of this experience is to help you prepare for the “Real World” as a researcher, educator, consultant, regulator, or citizen.

Course Schedule

At this time no formal schedule has been established for the course.  Please submit copies of your class schedules.  It is likely that class field events will occur during the week and you may need to spend one to two weekends collecting your field data.

Course Textbook

There will be no course textbook to purchase, but there will be a series of handouts.

Grading

The class is a team and will be working as a team, but each individual will complete one field research project and two assessments.  You will be required to maintain a notebook of all your work. This will be more like a journal than the traditional class notebook.

First Assessment – Develop a Personal Library of pdf files and other documents related to soil science and the application of soil science and provide a listing of potential careers or applications of soil science.  (15 % of grade)

Second Assessment – Pick one soil property or application and describe in detail, such as soil texture, consistency, color, structure, “land-based disposal of wastewater” etc.  You can use soil samples in the rock laboratory as examples or images to aid in description. (15 % of grade)

Complete One Research Project – As assigned by Mr. Brian Oram. (25 % of grade)

Field Conduct/Performance and Field Notebook (45 %)

Please note: All the members of your class are your team and your team will be consulted to determine your effectiveness as a “team player”.  This will be included in your field conduct grade. Therefore, work together as a team !
