Types of Treatments

There are a variety of water treatment systems, but the first step is not the installation of a water treatment system. The first step is an assessment of your system or source to attempt to identify any weaknesses or problems that may be contributing to a water-quality-related problem. Therefore, the initial questions are:

1. Is my source or problem caused by a natural or ambient condition?
2. Is my problem caused by a problem with how my system was constructed or situated?
3. Is my problem caused by some man-made or influenced activity or an activity for which a permit has been issued by a federal government or state agency?
4. Is my problem related to a bacteria, a disease-causing organism, a toxic metal, a volatile organic, a gas, or a semi-volatile organic, or a man-made substance and does this "contaminant" pose a health risk or does it just impact the aesthetic quality of the water?
5. What is my baseline water quality?  You must understand the cause of a water quality or environmental problem before you can fix the problem or concern.

After you KnowYourH2O, then the most common water treatment systems or modifications may include: Disinfection (Chlorination / UV Treatment/ Ozonation), Water Softening (Ion Exchange Softeners, Chelating Exchange Systems, Ionic Resins), Oxidation/Filtration (control of iron, manganese, and possibly hydrogen sulfide), Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, Deionization, Anion or Cation Exchange Resins, Neutralization / Corrosion Control,  or particle reduction/ filtration/ Granular-Activated-Carbon. Water treatment systems come in a number of approaches that may include a whole-house water treatment system or point-of-entry treatment system and then there are a series of point-of-use systems or "polishing" water treatment systems.
