Get Informed | Glycols

What are Glycols?

In its most simplest form, glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet liquid, viscous fluid used chiefly as an automobile antifreeze, heat exchange fluid, as a solvent, and used to make polyester fibers. Glycols can also be found in de-icing agents, brake fluid, motor oils, used in pesticides, pharmaceutical products, resin production, found in oil and gas hydraulic fracturing fluids, dehydration of natural gas, flowback water, paints, wood stains, inks, varnishes, cleaning products, and even printer cartridges. With respect to the environment, we are typically concerned with ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is a synthetic liquid compound that absorbs water and is an odorless clear solution that has a sweet taste and when swallowed it creates a water feeling on the tongue. Propylene glycol is often used as a "generally recognized safe" alternative to ethylene glycol. Rather than considering propylene glycol as not toxic, it should be considered less toxic than ethylene glycol.

Glycols are alcohols but in order to understand them, let us first consider other, simpler alcohols. We begin with methane, ethane, and propane, all of which are hydrocarbons with 1, 2, or 3 carbons, the latter two linked together with single bonds and with all other bonds linked to hydrogens. To make an alcohol, replace one of the hydrogens with a hydroxide group (OH–). You now have, respectively, methanol (or methyl alcohol), ethanol (or ethyl alcohol, the kind you can drink), and propanol (or propyl alcohol). To make a glycol, replace a hydrogen, on a carbon that doesn’t already have a hydroxide group, with another hydroxide group. The ethyl alcohol then becomes ethylene glycol and the propyl alcohol becomes propylene glycol. In the case of propylene glycol, there are two possible configurations. In the line of three carbons, take one of the end carbons, put the first hydroxide group on that carbon, and call it carbon 1; the middle carbon becomes carbon 2 and the carbon at the other end of the line becomes carbon 3. The second hydroxide group can be on either carbon 2 or carbon 3. In the first case, the compound becomes 1, 2 propylene glycol and in the second case, 1, 3 propylene glycol; the two numbers indicate on which carbons you can find the hydroxide groups. Having two variations (isomers) of propylene glycol really doesn’t matter for drinking water purposes but it can be very important for some other organic compounds.

How do Glycols become a problem?

After the ingestion of ethylene glycol (it has a sweet taste), it is rapidly absorbed by the body where it can damage the nervous system. Ethylene glycol is not held in the body long and typically flushes from the body in about 2 days following exposure. Ethylene glycol is toxic to humans and toxic to domestic pets such as cats and dogs, but it is not persistent in the environment; natural degradation in the environment can eliminate up to 50% of it in 2 days.

What are the Health Risks for Glycols?

Ethylene glycol is toxic, but the primary health concern is related to the toxic effects of its "daughters". As the ethylene glycol is being broken down by the body, the following daughters are created: glycolaldehyde, glycolate, glyoxylate, and oxalate. These metabolic breakdown products inhibit "oxidative phosphorylation and cellular respiration; glucose and serotonin metabolism; protein synthesis; DNA replication; and ribosomal RNA formation" (Source). This can result in damage to the nervous system, numbness, visual disturbances, acid-base imbalance in the body, i.e., acidosis, and in the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys, brain, and lungs.

Propylene glycol causes the same effects as ethylene glycols, but a higher dosage is required. The acidosis that it produces does not result in the formation of calcium oxalate crystals and the dose of propylene glycol may have to be 2 to 20 times higher to produce some of the same symptoms as ethylene glycol.

EPA 2006 Document on Ethylene Glycol.

For pet owners: " Ethylene glycol toxicity is a serious condition, and dogs only need to consume about a half a teaspoon of ethylene glycol per pound of body weight for it to be fatal." (Source)

What are the Standards for Glycols?

Glycols are not regulated or listed as a primary or secondary drinking water standard by the EPA and there is no federal maximum contaminant level in drinking water. The EPA has established a drinking water equivalent guideline of 70 mg/L (DWEL) and a Lifetime Health Advisory (LHA) of 140 mg/L or 14,000 ppb. The LHA is based on kidney toxicity that was observed at some ethylene glycol exposure concentrations in a recent study of ethylene glycol.

The EPA has also set these guidelines for ethylene glycol:

One-Day HAL: The level at which a child, drinking 1 liter of water in the course of one day, would not be expected to have any health problems related to ethylene glycol is 20 mg/L.

Ten-Day HAL: The level at which a child, drinking 1 liter of water per day for ten days, would not be expected to have any health problems related to ethylene glycol is 6 mg/L. Some states have set state-specific limits for ethylene glycol, such as: New Jersey 0.30 mg/L (300 ppb), Arizona 5.5 mg/L (5500 ppb), New Hampshire 7.0 mg/L (7000 ppb),  Pennsylvania (clean-up standards) ethylene glycol 14 mg/L but no recommendation for propylene glycol, Florida, Massachusetts, and Minnesota - 14.0 mg/L (14,000 ppb).

Wisconsin has a drinking water advisory for Propylene glycol of 25 mg/L. New Hampshire has set an interim drinking water guideline of 30 mg/L or 30,000 ppb for propylene glycol. "Propylene glycol, also known as 1,2-propanediol, is a synthetic (i.e., man-made) alcohol that attracts/absorbs water. It is a viscous, colorless liquid, which is nearly odorless but possesses a faintly sweet taste. (Cosmetics)"

Notes

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry indicates that the EPA has recommended that adults be exposed to no more than a daily total of 7 mg/L (7 ppm) of propylene glycol for a lifetime ("Summary of state and federal drinking water standards and guidelines" by the Chemical Communication Subcommittee of the Federal-State Toxicology and Regulatory Alliance Committee, 1990). (Source)

The Drinking Water Equivalent Level (DWEL) is a drinking water lifetime exposure level, assuming 100% exposure from that medium, at which adverse, noncarcinogenic health effects would not be expected to occur.

One-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to one day of exposure. The One-Day HA is intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day.

Ten-Day HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for up to ten days of exposure. The Ten-Day HA is also intended to protect a 10-kg child consuming 1 liter of water per day.

Lifetime HA: The concentration of a chemical in drinking water that is not expected to cause any adverse noncarcinogenic effects for a lifetime of exposure, incorporating a drinking water RSC factor of contaminant-specific data or a default of 20% of total exposure from all sources.

The Lifetime HA is based on the exposure of a 70-kg adult consuming 2 liters of water per day to a specific contaminant.

Get Tested | Glycols

Like many contaminants in drinking water, these compounds are potentially hazardous at levels or concentrations that do not impart a noticeable taste, odor (they do smell and taste sweet at higher concentrations), or appearance to the water. Your best course of action is to get your water tested and compile as much information as possible about your water supply source, well construction, surrounding land-use, activities surrounding your home, and the chemicals used and stored at your home.

Level 1 | Observational Self-Testing

Notes on Level 1 Testing for Glycols

Glycols do have a sweet odor, but in a diluted form this may not be apparent. Your first sign of a problem may be a symptom of glycol exposure or an aesthetic problem associated with another contaminant that is associated with glycol and the actual source of the contamination such as, a chemical spill or release or a leak of a geothermal loop containing glycol.

Observations for Glycols

There may be a faint sweet odor to the water and an off-taste.

Level 2 | Do-It-Yourself Water Testing

Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.

Notes on Level 2 Testing for Glycols

There are no simple home testing kits that include glycols, but CHEMetrics makes a very good, relatively low-cost easy-to-use field screening test for multiple samples that may be very useful. We also recommend using the Health Metric Drinking Water Test Kit as a rapid baseline assessment.

Level 3 | Informational Water Testing

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 3 Testing for Glycols

At this moment, we are not aware of an informational water test that specifically includes glycols. We recommend the CHEMetrics field screening test and the Tap Score Extended Well Test. Glycol is unlikely to be found in city water unless there is a backflow or piping issue. If you are concerned about drugs and pharmaceuticals in the water we would recommend the Tap Score testing.

Level 4 | Certified Water Testing

A Level 4 Certified Test Test uses chain-of-custody with a water professional coming to your home to prepare the water sample and then works with an accredited laboratory in order to certify your test results. This type of testing not only gives you the highest level of assurance in the accuracy of your test results, but can also be used as a document in legal cases. For Baseline Testing, we recommend that you use Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 4 Testing for Glycols

If you need certified testing for glycols, it would be advisable to test for a broader range of industrial-related chemicals, petrochemicals, and salts. If you need help with finding a certified laboratory please contact our team and we do recommend ordering a Neighborhood Environmental Report.

Get Treatment | Glycols

Pretreatment will be needed in some cases to ensure acceptable treatment by the primary water treatment system. Some of the treatment technologies may not be amenable to point-of-entry or even whole- house treatments options. For glycols, the current water treatment systems must be custom designed and properly sized. Periodic testing should be maintained after the treatment system is in place to ensure objectives are being met and the system is operating properly. Most systems will require maintenance on at least an annual basis. As a safeguard against glycol breakthrough, i.e., premature release or ineffective treatment by a water treatment system, it is necessary to conduct detailed water testing before and after any treatment systems and it may be advisable to consider the use of an ozonation system, a granular-activated-carbon filtration system, and a Reverse Osmosis/nanofiltration system to remove other salts likely associated with the glycol contamination.

Note - Granular activated carbon has a very limited effectiveness for glycols but it may assist with ozone by-products, and it is possible that more widespread groundwater remediation may be necessary.

Short-Term Treatment

In the short term the primary recommendation is to develop a temporary alternative drinking-water source and to attempt to identify the source and nature of the contamination.

Long-Term Treatment

Since the biological break-down of glycol in a groundwater system would most likely use up the "free oxygen" in the aquifer, it is likely the source would have a significant number of water quality issues. In the long term, it will be necessary to identify the source of the contamination and to install a custom remediation system for the aquifer. Because granular activated carbon has a limited effectiveness and it is likely other contaminants will be present, it is likely that a custom treatment solution and some on-site assessments will be needed.  Therefore, we strongly recommend contacting a local professional.
