For typical residential and commercial drinking water applications using the Ion exchange process, the contaminant causing a health or nuisance is exchanged for a contaminant that does not cause a health or nuisance issue.
(In layman’s terms, basically, what you’re doing is swapping out something bad for something that is not bad.) In most cases we are changing the chemistry of the water to remove a hazard or nuisance to improve the water but not changing the overall purity of the water. The most common example of an unselective Ion Exchange unit would be a Water Softener.
There are also select ion-exchange units that aid in the removal of specific contaminants such as: nitrate, arsenic, sodium, fluoride, iron, manganese, chloride, sulfate, tannins, and carbonates.. Typically these units use specialty resins or zeolites which have been incorporated into packaged whole-house and point-of-use water treatment systems.
